If you’re interested in anti-aging protocols, Nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) is a very hot topic right now. NMN is a precursor for NAD+, meaning it converts into NAD+ in the body.

Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide (NAD+) is found in all living cells and is an essential coenzyme required for our bodies to create energy. It is critical for longevity as it is involved in repairing DNA, switching on cells to make RNA (required to carry genetic information) and is used in many different metabolic processes.

NAD levels decline as we age. Although there is no concrete answer as to the degree to which this happens; it is reported to be at least 50% over the course of an adult life.

Reduced NAD in the body is directly correlated with aging; however, scientists have discovered that by supplementing with NMN, this can increase levels of NAD in the body to help fight against the aging process.

In studies on mice, oral administration of NMN (through drinking water) resulted in:

  • Rapid absorption and efficient transportation into blood circulation.
  • Immediate conversion to NAD+ in major metabolic tissues.
  • Significant suppression of age-related weight gain. At the 12-month mark, the mice that had consumed higher levels of NMN had decreased levels of fat mass compared to control groups (all while consuming a higher level of food).
  • Increased physical activity and significant preventative effects against impairments to energy metabolism.
  • Significantly improved insulin sensitivity and plasma lipid profile compared to control groups.
  • Improved myeloid-lymphoid composition, a balance of which should be maintained for overall health.
  • Stimulation of mitochondrial oxidative metabolism in skeletal muscle.
  • Significantly improved eye function and tear production.
  • Significantly improved bone mineral density.
  • No obvious negative effects (so was very well tolerated).

This long term study provided compelling support that NMN supplementation is a very effective anti-aging intervention for mice and the translation of this to humans could be an absolute game-changer in increasing longevity and quality of life.

How to increase NAD levels naturally

Taking NMN supplements is one of the most effective ways to increase NAD+ levels. However, you should do adequate research to ensure you are consuming a high quality supplement. There are several different processes currently used to create NMN and many suppliers lack transparency in this department.

To get sufficient NMN from food to raise NAD+ levels you would likely need to consume an unrealistic amount of NMN containing foods, such as edamame, broccoli, cabbage, avocado, tomato, cucumber and mushrooms. However, you can always try!
